Tactics went viral in Leftist / BLM / Antifascist scenes nationwide
in May 2020.
Autonomous and coordinated rioting ensued and continued through the summer, intermingled with protest, sparked by the murder of George Floyd.
Portland saw over 100 days of protest and applied riot tactics.
”Burn it Down” direct action as seen in Ferguson, MO 2014-2015, was documented outside of the mainstream, consistently on Twitter.
The challenge with BLM riots, in parsing rioting, looting and burning- is properly differentiating coordinated, direct action with what may be random acts of violence from an activated mob.

The Outside Agitator factor:
During the BLM summer of 2020, the killings of officers by right wing military serviceman Steven Carillo, the agitation by an Umbrella Man in Minneapolis (right), the presence of Boogaloo militiamen coordinating the night the precinct burned, all raised the specter of outside provocateurs.
Update:
Umbrella man was suspected as a Hells Angel, but a 2022 FBI memo seeking more info does not affirm the previous report.
But how widespread was the influence of outsiders on riot actions during the George Floyd protest and unrest ?
Critical mass was reached, behind a unified cause.
In an initial search on the ground for organized white supremacist coordination, this report found that riot actions were facilitated by organized Leftist protest, at times welcoming Anarchist-Antifascist rioting.
On Twitter, the mantra was not to “peace police” the protest but welcome “Diversity of Tactics” to the demonstration space.

Protests were organized in anticipation to NO murder charges against officers in death of Brianna Taylor.
Activist Left counter protest included an “Antifascist” U-Haul van arrival, distributing shields with marked logos for on-ground tactics.
The shooting came after the protest crowd was cornered in an industrial area with no place to go.
"Three Percenter" militiaman oversees as man in Red Backpack tosses in metal barriers for breaking windows. Elijah tries to intervene. 2 men make a beeline for him.
Red Backpack man continues the rampage. Elijah keeps trying to get the Instigators to stop. One of them gives the raised fist as he turns away :54
Elijah tells others in all black and another man with an umbrella, "STOP." He would confront the original Umbrella Man later at the AutoZone.
